SHS Air Force Junior ROTC

For the second year in a row, SHS Air Force Junior ROTC cadets volunteered at the annual Air Force Marathon at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB). Eighteen (18) cadets lent a helping hand for this special and unique volunteer opportunity.

Volunteer duties included working at hydration station “Q” at the 21-mile marker of the full marathon. Cadets filled cups and handed out water as the runners passed by. The team participated in a joint effort along with college Air Force ROTC cadets from Wright State University.

Not only did cadets volunteer, one SHS cadet ran in both the 5K and 10K race. Senior Grant Wirth, ran the 5K run on Friday evening and finished in second place overall for the male category. Likewise, Grant ran the 10K run on Saturday morning and finished second overall, as well, in the male category. The official marathon website posted his results for the 5K run with a 16:38 finish time and a 35:44 finish time for the 10k run.

According to the official Air Force Marathon website, there were 15,000 participants in the event this year, representing all fifty (50) states, which included the full marathon, a half marathon, a 10K run and a 5K run. In total, there were 2,400 volunteers who made this year’s marathon a success. Roughly $106,000 was raised for charity.
