In-Person & Virtual SHS Students Conduct Robot Lab

SHS Student

Springboro High School (SHS) Students in Mr. Korzan's Advanced Placement (AP) Physics 2 class recently investigated the characteristics of a transistor circuit using robot technology. Students, both in the classroom and learning at home, learned how to integrate a transistor and a relay, along with a protecting diode, in order to understand how today’s technology works on a larger scale.

Through the use of HTML 5 and JavaScript programming, students, both in-person and at-home/virtual (Model B), were able to use a simulation to show how to assemble their components correctly onto their robot breadboard. This simulated approach allowed the virtual students to be directly involved with a practical lab experience from the safety of their own home.

Currently, students in Springboro Schools are able to attend classes in-person, five days a week, or at-home/virtually using Google Classroom to receive instruction from a Springboro Schools’ teacher. Mr. Korzan is one of many teachers in Springboro Schools who has adapted his in-school curriculum to include the at-home/virtual learning component.

Even during our robot lab, I was able to involve my virtual student. I dropped off a robot to the virtual student’s home, then I created an HTML 5 simulation to help the student know how to add the components to the robot breadboard. I used this same simulation for my in-person students in class. It was a huge success for both the at-home/virtual and in-person students, making the lesson effective at involving virtual students in an actual lab,” said Mr. Korzan.

Mr. Korzan’s students are currently learning electric field theory in class, and through these small BOE-BOT robots, they can learn how the theory meets actual practice in today’s digital world.
