Five Points West Elementary

Principal's Welcome

Dear Five Points West Parents,

I want to take this opportunity to welcome your family to Five Points West for the 2009-10 school year.  So many good things happened inside our classrooms last year and our OAT scores are very good!  Those results are in the process of being mailed home.  The staff and I are excited about the start of another year.

While I know this will be a positive year for all of the boys and girls as far as their academics are concerned, it will be challenging for all of the adults-- parents and school staff.  The challenges will come in the form of the changes that were brought about by the fourth failure of an operating levy.  The biggest change will be how students arrive at school in the morning and leave in the afternoon.  About 500 of the Five Points (East and West) families lost busing as a result of the latest levy defeat.

Due to all of the changes, our operative motto for this year is Patience, Understanding and Let’s All Work Together.  Please view the transportation communication and diagram posted on our website.

Another change, but a happy one, will be different times for our school.  For 2009-10 our tardy bell will ring at 8:25 and we will have a 3:10 dismissal time.  With the earlier start time will come an earlier lunch time.  Our second graders will go to lunch at 10:40.  First graders will go to lunch at 11:10.  Third graders will go to lunch at 11:40.  Fourth and fifth graders will go to lunch at 12:10.  Lunch periods are all 30 minutes long followed by a 30 minute recess period.

Lunch prices remain the same as last year.  Student lunch is $2.15, extra milk is .50 cents.

This year we have set aside two nights for you to visit our school with your child to find classrooms and other areas of the school.  We have set aside August 17 for first and second grade and August 19 for third, fourth and fifth grade.  The time both evenings is 4:30-6:30 p.m.  Classrooms will be locked and teachers will not be here, however this should be a wonderful opportunity for the children to become acquainted with the school and location of their new classroom.  Class lists will be posted on the west doors at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, August 14.

Our Open House this year will be the evening of Thursday, September 3.  The times for grades 2 and 4 will be 6:00-7:00 p.m. and grades 1,3 and 5 will be 7:15-8:15 p.m.  Open House will have a little different format this year.  The entire hour will be spent in your child’s classroom.  Your teacher will be sharing information about your specific classroom, as well as the school in general.  The format for the evening will be to present information to parents that will be helpful to you as the year unfolds.  More information will be shared in a future communication.

Students in grades 2-5 will bring agenda books home early in the school year.  This will serve as a communication piece between home and school.  Our school handbook with all the policies and procedures spelled out will be included in the agenda as well.   First grade students will receive just a school handbook.

I will continue to use an e-mail distribution list as a means of communication.  We will not send home hard copies of newsletters, as another way of cutting costs.  Please remind friends and neighbors to subscribe if they have not already done so by visiting our school website at www.springboro.org, Our School, Five Points West, Sign up for Email Newsletter.

Again, welcome to the 2009-2010 school year!

Sincerely,

Victor Johantges, Principal
