National Honor Society

SHS National Honor Society

General Information
The core values of the Leora Locke Chapter of the National Honor Society at Springboro High School are: Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. All members of NHS exemplify these values both inside and outside the walls of SHS.

To be eligible for membership in the National Honor Society, students must:

  • Be in 11th or 12th grade at Springboro High School.
  • Have accumulated an overall grade point average (AGPA)* of 93.0000% or higher.
  • Have verification that they have completed a minimum of 25 volunteer hours prior to submitting an application.
  • Have excellent character and leadership skills.

Application Process
In the fall of their junior/senior year, students who have a cumulative grade point average of 93.0000% or higher (not rounded) will receive a notification letter informing them they are eligible to apply to be considered for membership in the Leora Locke Chapter of the National Honor Society. Eligible students must attend one of two available mandatory meetings where they will learn details about the application components and how to successfully submit their application. Students who do not submit one of the mandatory meetings for prospective members will not be able to access the application. Submitting an application does not guarantee acceptance into NHS.

Application Components and Requirements
  • Completed application form
  • Record of 25 completed volunteer hours, verified by an individual with no relation to the applicant. Volunteer hours can be recorded on paper or electronically on Schoolinks. If the applicant chooses to record their volunteer hours on Schoolinks, they should watch this video to ensure the hours are documented properly. Prospective members should enter their hours under "Volunteer Service," and hours must be verified by a supervisor.  Volunteer service considered for NHS membership are hours completed since the student entered high school (beginning the summer prior to 9th grade to the present), service for which the student was not compensated in any way, and service completed outside of the student's family.
  • List of student's activities and extracurricular activities (both school-related and outside of school)
  • List of leadership roles and/or activities
  • Typed essay (300 words or less)
Students will be given approximately 7-10 days to complete their application. Application deadlines will be clearly communicated to students during the meeting when they receive their application. No late or incomplete applications will be considered.

Membership decisions will be determined by a faculty committee, consisting of five faculty members appointed by the building principal. The chapter advisors serve as ex-officio members of the committee with voice, but no vote. With a faculty vote of 3-2 or better in favor of membership, a student is inducted into the National Honor Society. The decision of this committee is final. Faculty recommendations, names of members serving on the committee, and the reasons for their decisions are confidential and shall not be given to anyone.

Students and parents agree upon application submission that they accept that the committee decisions are final, and will not inquire as to why they were or were not considered for membership.

Membership decision notifications will be sent in late fall, with the induction ceremony typically taking place prior to Thanksgiving break.

Requirements for Members
All students who are inducted must complete a minimum of 10 volunteer service hours during their first year of membership. Students who are inducted as juniors and return to NHS as a senior must complete 20 volunteer service hours during their second year of membership.

All NHS members should be available for peer tutoring, as needed.

All NHS members must maintain their 93.0000% or higher cumulative grade point average throughout membership. Students not maintaining the minimum grade point average may be subject to probation or dismissal.

Students receiving disciplinary consequences may be subject to probation or dismissal.
