Postponement of the 2020-21 8th Grade Washington, D.C. Trip

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020-21 8th grade Washington, D.C. trip has been postponed - eighth grade students will not be going on the Washington, D.C.  trip during the 2020-21 school year. This trip had previously been rescheduled from its original 2020 November trip date to May 4-7, 2021.

Why is the district postponing the 2020-21 8th grade Washington, D.C. trip?

  1. COVID-19 Pandemic & Related Rules and Guidelines: There is no guarantee that we will be able to travel to Washington, D.C. due to the (a) ongoing COVID-19 pandemic; (b) continued increase in COVID-19 cases; (c) and perpetual changes in guidelines regarding travel restrictions within the United States.

  2. Health and Safety of Staff and Students: We cannot anticipate that any of our students will have had the vaccine by May 2021 since the vaccines are not currently available for SJHS-aged students. In addition, transportation seating arrangements and hotel room assignments do not allow social distancing to be achieved. One positive COVID-19 individual in a closed-circulation setting could result in the virus spreading to multiple peoples.

  3. Parent/Guardian Money: The logistics of sending over 400 8th grade students to Washington, D.C. requires that the tour company, Classic Student Tours, set hotel and bus reservations well in advance of the May 2021 trip date. If we ended up postponing the trip closer to the May 2021 date of the trip, then it is very realistic that parents/guardians would not receive back a majority of their money already paid to Classic Student Tours, as the money would have already been handed over to the bus lines and hotels.

Is the district canceling or postponing the 2020-21 8th grade Washington, D.C. trip? The district has decided to postpone the 2020-21 8th grade Washington, D.C.  trip and reschedule it for the end of the class of 2025’s freshman school year, 2021–22. We will plan to leave for Washington, D.C. in late May/early June after the conclusion of the students' last day of school on May 26, 2022. While there are no specific dates reserved for this trip, students can anticipate leaving late May/early June 2022 for this trip. More information, including trip dates, will be released in the upcoming months.
