Uke Can Do It!

SI Students

In less than a week, Larissa McIntosh, Springboro Intermediate Choir and Strings Teacher, raised $4,906 for her students, in order to purchase Ukuleles. Over two-hundred and forty (240) 6th grade students will be able to use Makala Soprano Ukuleles and Hercules Ukulele Hangers with Wood Bases during the 2020-2021 school year, as a result of an online fundraiser.

During a traditional school year, Ms. McIntosh’s students would spend the majority of their time singing. This particular school year, however, there are now challenges with singing. Choral singing indoors has been put on hold indefinitely for the school year, based on State of Ohio and county health guidelines. Music teachers across the country are striving to be flexible and creative in their endeavor to reach their students, given current restrictions.

Over half of the 6th grade students in Springboro Schools participate in choir. While the 6th graders in Ms. McIntosh’s class, who have music everyday for fifty (50) minutes, will not be able to sing in choir this school year, as a result of COVID-19, there is hope. By raising enough funds to purchase a class set of ukuleles, Ms. McIntosh’s students will now be able to continue making music during the school year.

“Like most students this age, my students learn the best by doing. Purchasing these ukuleles keeps them engaged in the lesson and provides them with alternative experiences that are safe, performance-based and fun,” said Larissa McIntosh. Ukuleles, which are easily disinfected, will allow the students to learn many of the same skills and concepts they would if they were singing in a way that is safe and sanitary for all members of the classroom community.

Ms. McIntosh continued, “Providing our middle school choir students with ukuleles will help them learn how to read and play music, but more importantly, give them a positive experience that supports their emotional well-being. I'm still in shock over the generosity of our parents and community members…thank you!”
